Hair Transplant Terminology
Follicular Units: Human hair grows naturally in groupings called follicular units. A follicular unit can consist of one to four hair follicles. Follicular units also contain one or two fine vellus hairs (i.e. fine hairs that are not visible to the naked eye), sebaceous glands, a small muscle, tiny nerves and blood vessels, and a fine band of collagen that surrounds the unit (the perifolliculum). Follicular unit hair transplants are the most natural and effective method of hair transplantation, resulting in much higher growth in comparison to other more antiquated methods, such as micro- and mini-grafts (see below) and plugs.
Mini- and Micro Grafts: Mini- and Micro-grafts are transplanted based on the number of hairs, not on follicular units. Micro-grafts generally have 1-2 hairs, and mini-grafts have 3-6 hairs. These types of grafts are less natural looking than follicular units. Generally, mini- and micro-grafts have a longer healing time because the excess skin is not trimmed which can make wounds larger. In addition, by cutting based on number of hairs, individual follicular units may be split up or damaged, leading to a lower hair growth rate in comparison to follicular unit transplants.
Hair Loss: True or False?
Brushing the hair 100 times a day will stimulate the circulation and prevent hair loss » False Vigorous brushing is more likely to injure the hairs and make the problem worse.
Some hairstyles, like braiding can cause hair loss » True Styles that pull or put tension on the hairs - such as tight ponytails or corn-rows - can cause hair loss.
Hats encourage hair loss because the hair can't breathe » False Hair does not need to breathe. Only the root of the hair is alive, and this gets its oxygen from the blood in the scalp.
Frequent shampooing makes hair fall out » False The 50-100 hairs we lose each day often become tangled with the rest of the hair but are washed out when we shampoo. So we see what seems like a lot of hair in the shower after shampooing, but in reality these hairs have been shed earlier.
Blow-drying can worsen hair loss » True The reason is that extreme heat damages the proteins in the hairs making them fragile and liable to break off. Brushing the hair during blow-drying causes more damage. If you use a hair dryer, it should be set on the coolest setting.
Hair coloring, perm solutions and hairsprays worsen hair loss » False Hair dyes, perms and hairsprays do not affect thinning hair. Perms and hairsprays can help to disguise the problem. Remember, it is the follicle, which is located beneath the skin, that produces the hair. Chemical treatments can damage the hair strands but can't affect the follicle.
Baldness can be linked to heart attacks » Inconclusive In 1999, doctors at Harvard Medical School found that men who had lost hair at the crown of the head had a 32% increased chance of coronary heart disease. Hair loss at the front of the head hardly increased the risk at all. Regardless of how accurate this study could be, to promote a healthy lifestyle, you should stop smoking, eat healthy, have your blood pressure checked and do some exercise.

What’s hair all about?
Hair has two separate parts: the follicle and the hair shaft. The follicle lies below the scalp and produces the hair shaft (strand) that you see growing out of your skin’s epidermis layer. The follicle is alive. The hair shaft is not – it’s made of fragile, dead cells that have no regenerative properties.
The follicle is a sac of skin tissue buried deep in the scalp. It has a bulb at the bottom. The sebaceous gland is attached to the follicle. It gives hair its shine by producing a natural lubricant called sebum. The follicle is where the personal characteristics of hair are decided: curly or straight, dry or oily, and thickness.
Hair has three basic layers: the medulla, the cortex, and the cuticle. The medulla is the innermost core of the hair where the body and strength is determined. The cortex is the middle (and largest) layer. It provides strength to the hair shaft, and determines the color, texture and elasticity. The cuticle protects hair from the environment by forming a tightly packed layer of protective scales that overlap.
How does hair grow?
Hair grows from the hair follicle at an average rate of one-half inch per month. Each hair grows for four to seven years, after which it enters a “resting phase,” and then falls out. A new hair begins growing in its place between three weeks and three months later. At any one time, 85 percent of hair is growing and 15 percent is resting. The life of a hair consists of three phases:
ANAGEN PHASE. when the hair is actually growing;
CATAGEN PHASE. short transition stage (2-3 weeks) when hair stops growing; and,
TELOGEN PHASE. when the hair is resting. At the end of the telogen stage, the hair shaft falls out and a new strand starts to grow in its place.
Questions on Procedure
What is a hair transplant exactly? A hair transplant procedure is an artistic redistribution system that takes donor-dominant hair follicles from the very back and sides of the head and artfully transplants them into thinning or balding areas. With SFHT follicular unit technologies, this results in a very natural appearance. Basically we take hair from where you have more than you need and put it where you need it more, the ideal solution to baldness.
How long do hair transplants last? For the vast majority of patients, virtually all transplanted hair lasts a lifetime. In some cases, a small percentage of transplanted hair may be lost as the patient ages.
Is it going to hurt? Although patients are administered local anesthetics and other medications, the degree of pain or discomfort experienced by patients during or after the procedures varies among patients. We also supply patients with medication to use after the procedure, if needed. Many of our patients find that they do not need to take any medication at all after their hair transplant procedure.
How does the SFHT differ from all the others I see advertised? SFHT can't account for the work of others because we don't know the exact protocols and specific technical variations that are used elsewhere. We can talk to you about SFHT hair transplant techniques which emphasize the natural variations in the texture and color of hair, the angles and directions of hair growth, and the size and shape of grafts. The artistry involved in combining these numerous variations significantly impacts the naturalness of the hair restoration results. Not every physician has the skill or aptitude for this refined technique.
Is there any scarring? Whenever human skin is cut, it always heals by the process called "fibrosis." This fibrosis (commonly known as scarring) is the skin's way of healing. Thanks to the skill of our experienced hair transplant physicians, the healing sites in the transplanted areas are usually so small that the fibrosis is virtually undetectable. Any scar in the donor area is covered by your existing hair. At SFHT, hair transplantation procedures are designed to produce a very natural look. In the great majority of cases, the microtechnologies currently used make the restored hairline virtually undetectable.
Are there any complications or risks with the hair transplantation surgery? Occurrences of infection after a hair transplant procedure are rare. In the few cases where infection does occur, it is often due to the patient's failure to fully follow post-operative instructions. Even when infection occurs, it generally is easily treatable with antibiotics, which can be prescribed by the physician.
How many grafts will it take to cover 1 square inch? That is very difficult to answer without seeing you. This is because the number of grafts required will ultimately be dependant upon the texture and quality of your hair, i.e. darker, coarser hair may require fewer grafts to cover the same area as compared to lighter colored, fine hair. It will also be dependent upon your degree of baldness and your density goals.
Can I have the procedure done by SFMT? Yes, you may have a procedure done by Dr.Nader Shehata. However,The price of each Hair follicles is $2.00/follicle which is 60% cheaper than any other Hair Restoration center.
Do you use laser in the hair transplantation procedure? Bosley physicians do not feel that the laser benefits patients. It can damage healthy hair follicles, have a negative impact on scalp elasticity, and in general, slow down the healing process. The use of lasers in hair restoration has diminished greatly in the last few years.
How many procedures are necessary for hair restoration? The number of procedures necessary to achieve a personally desired goal varies from person to person and the individual degree of hair loss; Our center try to perform the procedure in one session. Up to 4000 Hair Follicles could be done.but in our experience, a few minority of our patients need only two procedures.
Questions on Causes and Options
Do you offer Rogaine and Propecia? And, how effective are they for treating baldness? The manufacturers of both Rogaine and Propecia tell you that their products are not effective in the frontal area, which is the area of most concern to most patients, especially the frontal hairline. With Rogaine, the manufacturer (Upjohn) claims that approximately 8-10% get cosmetically effective growth and another 20% get vellus or peach fuzz growth. The manufacturer of Propecia (Merck) claims slightly better results.
I have a medical condition, can I still receive a hair transplant? Preexisting medical conditions are always a concern of your SFMT. If you have a preexisting medical condition, please tell your Senior Counselor at the time of your consultation. For your convenience, we have listed responses for some of the most frequently asked medical questions:
COUMADIN If you are taking Coumadin, you will need to be off Coumadin for a week prior to your hair restoration procedure. When you have a consultation, Dr. Nader Shehata may require an okay from your physician.
DIABETES We have performed many successful hair transplant procedures for patients with diabetes. However, to determine possible candidacy for hair restoration, you will first need to have a consultation with Dr. Shehata who may require an okay from your diabetes physician to confirm that your diabetes is under good control.
INTRAVENOUS SEDATION At SFMT, intravenous sedation never been used for hair restoration procedures. Instead, patients are administered local anesthesia and are able to relax and watch a video, stretch or use the restroom at any time during the procedure. If you would like additional sedation or relaxation, you may request it from Dr. Shehata who will be pleased to order it for you.
KIDNEY TRANSPLANT For various medical reasons, a hair restoration procedure cannot be done prior to a pending kidney transplant. However, once a kidney transplant procedure is completed and has healed, Dr. Shehata can determine if it is feasible for you to have a hair transplant procedure.
LUPUS (Erythematosus) - LE Our physicians at SFMT believe that, in many cases, it is not a good idea to transplant hair into an area where the hair loss caused by LE has occurred. After hair has been transplanted into such an area, the LE process (which caused the hair loss) could recur. However, in some cases (when LE has been inactive for many years) it is feasible to do hair transplants. Your Bosley physician will determine this.

General Questions Why come to SFHT? There are two good reasons why we believe you might be well advised to have your hair transplant performed at SFHT. Can I see an actual person who has had the work done? Yes, we can arrange for you to see a patient who has had hair restoration work done. How we can see Hair trasplant to be looking like a natural Hair? This is a very good question. The answer is that if you see a recently completed hair transplant today that doesn't look natural, this is often because it's a bad hair transplant. Dr. SHEHATA restorations go unnoticed by you and everyone else in the great majority of cases because they are so natural-looking. Modern research in hair growth has discovered that natural scalp hairs actually grow in small groupings (called follicular units) of 1, 2, 3 or occasionally 4 hairs per unit. So, it is our strong emphasis at SFHT not just to imitate nature, but to try to duplicate nature. We employ micro-technologies that use closely placed and randomly dispersed 1, 2, 3, and 4 hair units. With our experience in the hair restoration, we have refined these micro-technologies to the point where often other medical doctors, even upon close inspection, have a difficult time telling which natural hairs are original (non-transplanted) and which natural hairs have been restored (transplanted). This is why SFHT is follicular unit hair restoration.
Do you do hair transplants on women? Yes. Female hair loss is quite common. In fact, studies indicate more than 20 million American women are experiencing some degrees of female pattern baldness. "The great majority of women with typical female pattern hair loss can be helped significantly," says Dr. SHEHATA. Though women can lose hair in a different pattern than men do - often thinning behind the hairline - the treatment procedure is similar for both. First the patient and the SFHT decide upon the areas where new hair is desired. Then the doctor locates a "donor area" with sufficient excess healthy hair. According to Dr. SHEHATA, "Women usually have a similar donor area to men. This means they have enough supply to fulfill the demand, so the results are usually very good."
Why do men go bald?
Male-pattern baldness (also known as Androgenetic Alopecia) is the most common form of hair loss for men, representing up to 90% of all male cases. There are some 40 million male adults in North America today experiencing hair loss. Mild to moderate hair loss affects about 50% of all men by the time they are 50. Male pattern hair loss results in either a receding hair line or thinning at the crown of the head. It occurs due to a chemical known as dihydrotestosterone (or “DHT”) which builds up around the follicle and eventually kills the follicle and the hair.
A follicle’s resistance to DHT is genetic – which is why some people go bald and others do not. If you have relatives with thin hair or who are bald, you may well develop the same problem, although the gene can also skip generations and can be inherited from either the mother’s or the father’s side of the family.
Aging makes baldness more likely. Sixty five% of men have noticeable hair loss by age 60. Most elderly people have thin, fine hair even if they are not noticeably bald. Other factors and conditions that cause hair loss, include braiding (currently popular with African American men) and Alopecia Areata (spotty hair loss).
Hair Care Tips: Four steps to healthier hair
+Step 1: Shampoo your hair frequently It is good to shampoo your hair – we recommend at least three times a week. This helps to remove dirt and buildup on the hair that can deteriorate the condition of your scalp. When shampooing, it is very important that you pay attention to cleansing your hair, your scalp and your hair line. Many people (wrongly) will drop a handful of shampoo on their head and then rinse it off. Shampoo must be worked through all of your hair, as well as the scalp and hairline. Did you notice that when you shampoo your hair the amount of lather often varies? Usually, the more lather you have, the less buildup you have on your hair. It’s also important to fully rinse out the shampoo to eliminate any residual detergents – they can damage the hair shaft and scalp.
+Step 2: Use a conditioner and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize Frequently shampooing can dry out your hair and, therefore, must be followed by the use of a moisturizing conditioner. It is very important to work the conditioner through all of your hair and leave it in for three to five minutes. Again, many people misapply and misuse conditioner by not working it through to the ends of the hair and not leaving it on long enough. Correct use of conditioners containing light proteins, such as hydrolyzed human hair keratin proteins, can help strengthen your hair. A good conditioner with these proteins can easily penetrate the hair shaft to replenish nutrients. These proteins can also repair split ends. Split ends develop after the protective cuticle has been stripped away from the end of hair fibers as a result of harsh chemicals or even vigorous brushing.
+Step 3: Protect your hair from the elements. Use a leave-in conditioner that contains sun block (UV protector). Excessive exposure to the sun can damage your hair by inducing oxidation of the sulfur molecules within the hair shaft, leaving the hair weak, brittle, dry and faded. People who bleach or lighten their natural hair color may also notice slight color changes in their hair when it is exposed to sun. Blond hair may turn yellow, fade or become dull due to UV exposure. Even natural brunette hair tends to develop reddish hues from sun exposure due to oxidation of melanin pigments.
+Step 4: Maintain a healthy diet Hair requires the same overall nutrition that the body does: plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, grains and protein including lean meat and fish. Dietitians recommend foods high in biotin, including brown rice, bulgar, brewer’s yeast, soybeans, green peas, lentils, oats, sunflower, seeds and nutritious nuts. Nutritionists advise healthy hair seekers to eat well-balanced diets that incorporate healthy proteins along with foods high in vitamins B, C, E, A and K. Hair instantly responds to the addition of protein-rich foods such as meats, eggs, cheese, seeds and nuts. Fish packs a double punch of protein combined with healthbuilding essential fatty acids and natural oils. We recommend you discuss your diet with a medical professional.

Why Tricomin?
The science behind Tricomin®
While we know a lot about copper and Triamino Copper Nutritional Complex™ (the key ingredient in Tricomin products), we thought you might be interested how they relate to the health of your hair.
Q: Did you know that your body and your hair require copper to be at their best?
A: It’s true – and scientifically proven!! Development of the Tricomin line of hair care products evolved from years of research involving copper and amino acids. Copper is linked to these important biological processes critical to the health of your skin and hair:
- Melanin production (pigmentation)
- Energy metabolism
- Scavenging of damaging free radicals
- Crosslinking of collagen and elastin
- Inhibition of 5-alpha reductase (the enzyme that reduces testosterone to DHT – its active metabolite reponsible for androgenetic alopecia)
Q: Did you know that your hair is relatively rich in copper?
A: Also true. Compared to most other parts of your body, your hair has a natural affinity for copper. Interestingly enough, copper levels in the body tend to decrease as you get older, just at the time when you may need it the most!
Q: Did you realize that your hair follicles cycle between growth periods and resting periods?
A: Again true! In fact, hair thinning and loss can result from changes in the hair cycle resulting in a process known as miniaturization.
The Tricomin Advantage
In addition to the science of copper, other components of the Tricomin products (such as panthenol) add desirable structural qualities to the hair, building body and adding shine. While Tricomin’s cosmetic benefits will be realized in the short-term, the added benefits of the Triamino Copper Nutritional Complex™ may require longer term use.
As the centerpiece of the product line, Tricomin Solution – Follicle Therapy Spray combines the highest concentration of copper peptide with an excellent leave-in conditioner framework. Tricomin products can be used effectively with other hair treatments including Rogaine™ and Propecia™, providing additional benefit to the hair follicle and surrounding environment.
