It’s majorly caused by fibrous connective cords that tether the skin to underlying muscle, with the fat lying between. As the fat cells accumulate, they push up against the skin, while the long, tough cords are pulling down. This creates an uneven surface or dimpling.

It mostly occurs in post pubescent females. There appears to be a hormonal component to its presentation since it’s rarely seen in males. The lumpiness of cellulite is caused by fat deposits that push and distort the connective tissues beneath skin, leading to the characteristic changes in appearance of the skin. There are a number of causes of cellulite which include:

Genetic factors

There is a genetic element in individual susceptibility to cellulite.

Predisposing factors

Several factors have been shown to affect the development of cellulite. Sex, race, biotype, predisposition to lymphatic and circulatory insufficiency.

A high stress lifestyle will cause an increase in the level of catecholamine, which is associated with the evolution of cellulite.

Hormonal factors

Hormones play a dominant role in the formation of cellulite.

Numerous therapies exist for the treatment of cellulite. They include:

This is a group of chemicals that include aminophylline, caffeine and theophyilline. These chemicals are present in many cellulite creams and are promoted as treatments for cellulite because of their known ability to break down fat stores.

Dietary Supplements

Several products contain a variety of ingredients such as sweet clover, grape-seed bioflavinoids, bladder wrack extract, and primrose and fish oil. These products have positive effects on the body such as boosting metabolism, improving circulation, protecting againt cell damage and breaking down fats. There are no valid clinical studies to support the use dietary supplements for the treatment of cellulite although some dietary supplements may also pose health risks.

Massage Treatments

Several machines have been introduced that offer massage in the areas affected by cellulite. They are usually rolling cylinders to gather areas of skin and massage them inside a chamber. This type of treatment is very expensive.

The technique uses an electrically powered device that sunctions, pulls and squeezes affected areas.

Laser or light therapy

This one combines sunction or massage with light therapy for the temporary reduction of the appearance of cellulite. They are even more costly than massage treatments though both treatments require multiple treatment sessions and maintenance treatments to keep up the improved appearance.

This is a controversial treatment for cellulite that involves injecting drugs or other substances directly into the affected tissue. Herbs and vitamins are often used in the injection cocktails. Multiple injectors over multiple sessions are administered. Through a healthy diet and regular exercise, one can get rid of cellulite. Topical treatment of retinol cream use has also been shown to improve the appearance of cellulite.
